Chimney Rock - New Mexico
This is one of 3 trails on Ghost Ranch Conference Center where Georgia O'Keefe spent time painting. From the top there is an excellent view of the Piedra Lumbre basin. This hike has wonderful views as the trail climbs from 6,500 to 7,100 feet. The breathtaking landscapes along the way gave me plenty of opportunities to take photographs. I could smell the aroma of sage mingled with juniper and pinon.
The formations are composed primarily of soft and disintegrating sandstone or gypsum, so it was not safe to attempt to climb any rock formations and sometimes the trails were clearly marked and other times they had given way to fallen rocks. When I reached the point that the trail did start to fall away a large crow appeared. He soared around me with out sound,
I have had this happen before. So I spoke to the bird, please land so I can take your photo. Sure enough it did, see image 58. Then he took off again, he stayed right with me my whole travel up. Even once I was at the top he continued to sore around. Once I got back down to a safe more level point in the travel he disappeared. I have someone watching over me. Very cool.
When I did reach the top, it was so windy I had to sit down on my butt and slide myself to the edge, was a long way down and no edge, was very narrow up there. Didn't stay too long.
